Concerns have been raised about the popularity of ketamine in the US following the death of Matthew Perry

US doctors and experts have expressed concern about the growing popularity of ketamine use for medical purposes without proper oversight in the country. The death of actor Matthew Perry was a prime example of the high risks associated with such practices, reports The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The tragic Perry incident should be ‘a wake-up call that ketamine needs to be used appropriately,’ – said Dr Gerard Sanacora, director of the Depression Research Program at Yale University.

According to Dr Sandhya Prashad’s assessment, there has been a ‘Wild West dynamic’ around ketamine in the US due to the fact that the drug, whose efficacy in treating mental health is unquestionable, is still not sold or regulated as a medicine.
